Current Information:Born-Acton Enlisted-London Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery, Belgium
During the opening months of 1915, the 1st Somerset Light Infantry battalion of 11 Brigade, 4th Division were either in trenches in Ploegsteert Wood or in billets close by. The weather was atrocious and these new trenches were often 3 feet deep in mud or frozen solid. The conditions made things very trying, especially bringing up food and other supplies to the men in the trenches, not to mention the shelling and sniper fire that they had to contend with on a daily basis. Walter Gibbons was killed on 1st March but there is no further information concerning his death. |
